If you want to improve your intuition, consider making changes to your diet!
Your intuition is a powerful inner guide, often referred to as your “gut feeling”, “inner voice”, or “sixth sense.”
It’s that quiet wisdom that can steer you in the right direction when faced with a tough decision. It helps you stay grounded and provides clarity when you’re stuck or unsure.
But did you know that your diet can affect how to improve your intuition?
Your intuitive abilities depend on a clear and balanced mind and body—something that can be hindered by certain foods.
If you’re feeling disconnected, sluggish, or unclear, it might be time to assess your eating habits.
In this article, I’ll explore how you can improve your intuition with diet, backed by current research and practical insights. I’ll also share the 9 food groups I recommend eliminating if you want to deepen your intuitive connection.
The Science Behind Food and Intuition
Before diving into the specific foods I recommend eliminating to improve your intuition, it’s important to understand that intuition isn’t just a mystical concept.
And your intuition is far more connected to your diet than you might realize!
Modern neuroscience has even revealed fascinating connections between gut health, cognitive function, and what we traditionally call “intuition”.
Understanding the Gut-Brain Connection
Recent research has revealed fascinating connections between our gut and brain function through what scientists call the gut-brain axis.
The gut-brain axis is a sophisticated, bidirectional communication system between your brain and your digestive tract (aka your gut!).
Your gut contains over 100 million neurons, earning it the nickname “the second brain”. And it plays a crucial role in how you feel and process information.
Even more remarkably, your gut produces approximately 95% of your serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter crucial for cognitive function and emotional regulation.
And when you consume certain foods, they either support or hinder this delicate communication system. This then directly affects your ability to access your intuitive guidance.
So, let’s explore some of the foods and food groups that might be hindering or blocking your intuitive abilities. As a Registered Holistic Nutritionist, I’ll also give you some ideas of what to eat instead!
9 Food Groups You Can Eliminate to Help Improve Your Intuition
1. Highly Processed Foods
Highly processed foods like pre-packaged snacks and ready-to-eat meals are often full of artificial colours, preservatives, and chemicals. All of these can significantly impact your cognitive function, digestive function, and accordingly, your intuitive function.
Multiple recent studies have linked ultra-processed food consumption to cognitive decline.
For example, a 2022 study in JAMA Neurology found that higher consumption of ultra-processed foods was associated with a significantly faster rate of cognitive decline. Common food additives like emulsifiers are also very damaging to gut health, and could contribute to cognitive decline.
When you consume ultraprocessed foods, your body diverts valuable resources toward detoxifying these harmful ingredients. This may leave you with less energy for the subtle, intuitive processes associated with good gut-brain communication.
2. Refined Sugars and Artificial Sweeteners
The relationship between sugar consumption and cognitive function is well-documented.
When you consume refined sugars, your body experiences rapid glucose spikes that can leave you feeling foggy, anxious, and un-grounded.
If you’ve ever experienced a blood sugar crash or woken up the next day with a “sugar hangover”, you’ll understand this connection all too well.
These energy highs and lows make it harder to tune into and trust your intuition.
And in case you’ve ever assumed that artificial sweeteners are a better option, they aren’t.
This 2017 study found that “intake of artificially sweetened soft drinks were associated with an increased risk of ischemic stroke, all-cause dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease dementia“.
Both refined sugars and artificial sweeteners worsen inflammation throughout your entire body. This affects not just your physical health but also your emotional and mental health.
3. Caffeine and Excessive Stimulants
While caffeine is often used to boost energy, it can overstimulate your nervous system. This can cause anxiousness, restlessness, and difficulty focusing.
When you rely on caffeine to get through the day, you’re likely missing important signals from your body. And of course these signals include the subtle nudges of your intuition.
The constant stimulation can drown out your inner voice, making it harder to access and connect with your natural intuitive abilities.
4. Dairy Products
If you’re sensitive to dairy products, you know they can trigger digestive issues, bloating, inflammation, and so much more.
When your body is wrestling with discomfort or inflammation from dairy consumption, it’s harder to tap into your intuition. All of your energy is going to support and heal the physical body.
If you feel disconnected and uncomfortable after eating dairy, eliminate it for a trial. See how this improves your physical, mental and emotional health!
And if you can tolerate dairy, fermented dairy offers the most health benefits.
5. Gluten and Highly Refined Grains
The impact of gluten on cognitive function extends beyond those with celiac disease. Gluten sensitivity can even “manifest solely with neurological dysfunction” in some people.
Gluten sensitivity can manifest as brain fog, memory issues, and mood changes, among others. For example, if a person can’t think clearly, or feels excessively tired after eating gluten.
These symptoms can significantly impact your ability to connect with your intuition. Your physical, emotional, and mental health and well-being are affected, making it harder to receive intuitive messages.
6. Fried and Trans Fats
Trans fats are commonly found in fried and commercially baked foods. They are also well-known to increase inflammation in the body.
Fried foods also create a heavy burden on your digestive system, which can affect the gut-brain connection I mentioned earlier.

7. Excessive Alcohol
The U.S. Office of the Surgeon General recently issued an advisory on the scientific evidence between alcohol consumption and an increased risk of 7 different types of cancers.
At the same time, we know that alcohol affects our ability to process information. When your body is busy metabolizing alcohol, it’s operating at a reduced capacity. It could therefore have an impact on the gut-brain connection and our intuition.
All of my clients agree to abstain from alcohol for at least 24 hours before an Akashic reading because it can affect the intuitive connection so deeply.
Many people also experience more mental clarity after reducing or eliminating their alcohol consumption.
8. Meat from Factory-Farmed Animals
The energy of the food you consume can affect your own energy field, and this is particularly true with animal products.
Factory-farmed meat can contain high levels of stress hormones, antibiotics, and environmental toxins. Nutritional research has shown that these substances can contribute to inflammation and cognitive dysfunction.
9. Artificially Flavoured and Coloured Foods
Artificial flavours and colours help make food taste good and look pretty. But they can have a major impact on your energy and brain function!
These artificial additives can also cause digestive issues and inflammation. And as we’ve learned, this can directly affect your ability to connect with your intuition.
How to Improve Your Intuition Through Diet
The truth is: if you want to improve your intuition, you need to be consuming whole, nutrient-dense foods. These are the only ones that naturally support your physical health, mental clarity and emotional balance.
For example, fresh, organic produce provides nutrients and vital life force energy. Dark leafy greens are rich in folate and other B vitamins to produce neurotransmitters and help support brain health. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, meanwhile, have been studied and shown to reduce inflammation and enhance brain function.
High-Vibrational Foods to Support Your Intuition
Here are some high-vibrational foods to swap or include in your diet:
- Vibrant, fresh, nutrient-dense fruits and vegetables that support physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health and well-being
- Calming teas such as chamomile, peppermint, or lemon balm as alternatives to coffee and other stimulants
- Gluten-free grains like quinoa, brown rice, and amaranth if you tolerate grains
- Natural sweeteners like raw honey, maple syrup, or monkfruit (in moderation) if you need to satisfy a sweet tooth
- Brain-boosting fats from foods like wild-caught fish, olive oil, and avocados
- If consuming animal products, choose pasture-raised, organic, or wild-caught ones
These nutrient-dense foods will help you feel more grounded and focused. This in turn makes it easier to receive and perceive your inner wisdom.
Practical Tips to Improve Your Intuition Through Diet
Improving your intuition through your diet doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Maybe just start with a gentle three-day reset?
To deepen your intuitive connection, focus on nourishing your body with whole, nutrient-dense foods. Avoid processed foods, refined sugars, stimulants, and other pro-inflammatory foods, as much as you can. You’ll support the health of your gut-brain axis and naturally improve your intuition.
It’s a good idea to keep a food journal or food log to track how foods affect your mental clarity, cognitive function, and intuitive abilities. You can grab my free food journal templates here.
Consider adopting some simple, mindful eating practices, which can feel like meditation, mindfulness, or natural stress reduction techniques.
Be Patient with the Process
Enhancing your intuition through diet is a journey of awareness and conscious choice.
By eliminating foods that create noise in your energy system, you create an internal environment where intuition can flow naturally.
Remember that everyone’s body responds differently. It’s important to pay attention to your personal experiences and adjust accordingly.
