Why Your Luteal Phase is the Best Time for Your Intuition and Inner Work

luteal phase mood self-reflection practices

Every month, you may have one week when everything feels just a little off, and your luteal phase mood shifts.

You may be seeing life through a foggy lens, but at the same time, you’re catching glimpses of something deeper. Your dreams get weirder, your gut instincts sharpen, and you might even sense the energy in a room before you even step inside.

If you’re highly sensitive, an empath, or an intuitive, this probably happens for you more often than not!

For the rest of us, this might be signs of our luteal phase mood shift.

If you’ve ever wondered why your inner world feels so much louder in the week or two before your period, it’s not just in your head (well, actually, it is, but in a scientific way).

This is the phase of your cycle when your body is practically begging you to slow down, turn inward, and pay attention.

Common Luteal Phase Mood Symptoms

The luteal phase takes place on roughly days 17–28 of a standard menstrual cycle. It begins after ovulation and ends when your period arrives.

As progesterone rises, it brings emotional depth, heightened sensitivity, and a touch of moodiness (or a tidal wave, depending on the day).

During your luteal phase, it’s common for your hormones (and therefore your mood) to go up and down like a rollercoaster.

Here are some common luteal mood symptoms you might experience during this phase:

  • Anxiety and tension
  • Irritability and mood swings
  • Changes in sleep patterns
  • Food cravings and their connection to mood
  • Social withdrawal tendencies
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Energy level fluctuations

But it’s important to remember that your luteal phase mood isn’t a flaw. It’s a function of your hormones and natural cycle. And because of this greater self-awareness, there is no better time for your inner work.

The Sacred Relationship Between Your Luteal Phase Mood and Your Intuition

Beyond the cranky moments, this hormonal shift unlocks a lot of blessings, making it a natural time for self-reflection and self-awareness.

In fact, during this time, you might notice your intuition getting louder, or even more insistent. It’s as if the veil between your conscious and subconscious minds and your deeper wisdom grows thinner.

Your luteal phase “blessings” will be unique to you. However, they could include:

  • A sharper intuition – You just know things without knowing how you know them.
  • A stronger connection to your emotions – Things that didn’t bother you last week suddenly do.
  • An invitation to clear what’s not aligned – Relationships, projects, or beliefs that feel misaligned become impossible to ignore. That’s a nice way of saying that if something is getting on your last nerve, you’re likely to fix it, remove it, or burn that bridge for good!
  • Sudden clarity about relationships that have felt foggy for months.
  • An uncanny ability to read between the lines in conversations. You don’t know how, but you can feel when people are not being honest or true.
  • Creative breakthroughs that seem to come from nowhere. I adore these nuggets of genius! I’m writing this post during my own luteal phase and I have had so many unique, AMAZING product and service ideas… I just wish I had the time and energy to act on every one of them!

You’re also most likely to be bluntly, and brutally, honest with yourself (and others!) during your luteal phase. You might even say some things you’ve been wanting to say but haven’t been able to!

(And don’t blame me if you say some things you regret, but do take your own self-care seriously so you can minimize these instances.

The Art of Sacred Solitude

While society might label your desire to withdraw as antisocial, this natural instinct serves a deeper purpose. Your luteal phase is an invitation to practice what I lovingly refer to as “sacred solitude”.

Sacred solitude is alone time that is not focused on productivity or self-improvement, but on listening to your inner wisdom.

Inner Work Practices for the Luteal Phase

Instead of letting your luteal phase spiral into overthinking (because let’s be real, the luteal phase LOVES to throw a good existential crisis into the mix), let’s explore some practical and effective ways to help support your luteal phase mood.

1. Create Sacred Space

I love to create sacred space to honour this time in my cycle. If you want to dedicate space for your own intuition and inner work, you might like to:

  • Designate a corner (or a closet) of your home as a meditation or journaling space.
  • Create simple rituals to mark the beginning of your luteal phase reflection time.
  • Set up a small altar with objects that represent your current questions or journey.
  • Use specific crystals like moonstone or labradorite to enhance your intuitive connection.

2. Explore Yourself Through Journalling

Luteal-phase journaling isn’t about cute affirmations. It’s raw, unfiltered, messy, and probably mouthy too. It’s also a time for breakthroughs.

Try these truth-seeking journal prompts:

  • What emotions are surfacing for me right now?
  • Where am I holding myself back?
  • What is my body trying to tell me?
  • What truth am I avoiding that’s trying to surface?
  • Which relationships feel energetically draining, and why am I allowing this?

3. Dreamwork

Ever noticed how your dreams get more vivid (and sometimes straight-up bizarre) during the luteal phase? I have!

The other night, I had a dream in which I was mouthing off to a poor but incompetent clerk (something I would never do in real life) at university (I graduated 20+ years ago). I could SWEAR I was there in real-time, in real life.

Our dreams can mess with us and our mood during the luteal phase. They can also be a valuable source of intuitive insight and symbolism.

Before bed, try a practice like dream incubation by holding a specific question in your mind. You might ask:

  • What do I need to know about my current career path?
  • What’s the root cause of my current relationship challenge?
  • What’s the next step in my spiritual growth?
  • or any other question your conscious mind has been struggling with.

Write it down and place it under your pillow. Keep a dream journal by your bed and jot down anything that stands out.

4. Akashic Records Questions

If you work with the Akashic Records, this is a powerful time to access deeper wisdom. The veil feels thinner, and your connection to the Records (or any intuitive practice) may feel more fluid.

You might ask some or all of these questions:

  • What soul lesson am I being invited to master during this cycle?
  • Where am I resisting growth, and why?
  • If I trusted my intuition completely right now, what would I do differently?
  • How can I release ancestral patterns that no longer serve me?
  • What actions can I take to align more deeply with my soul’s purpose?

My Akashic Records vibrational healing track is a beautiful complement to this practice.

5. Shadow Work

The luteal phase has a way of bringing your shadows into sharp focus. Instead of seeing this as uncomfortable, recognize it as an opportunity for profound healing. Your irritations become your teachers.

When something or someone triggers you during this phase:

  1. Note your immediate reaction.
  2. Ask yourself: “What part of me is being activated?”
  3. Journal about where else in your life you’ve felt this way.
  4. Look for patterns in what consistently triggers you.
  5. Consider what these triggers might be trying to teach you.

6. Energy Hygiene and Grounding Practices

Your sensitivity is heightened, making energetic hygiene extra important.

In addition to the self-reflection and spiritual practices I have already mentioned above, the following practices can help you manage your luteal phase mood shifts:

Honouring Your Luteal Phase Without Overwhelm

It’s easy to get lost in your emotions during the luteal phase, but don’t let your mind bully you into thinking everything is falling apart.

Instead of spiralling, use this time to tune in, clear what’s misaligned, and trust that your intuition is guiding you exactly where you need to be.

The next time your luteal phase rolls around and you’re feeling extra *itchy, grab your journal, take a deep breath, and listen. Your inner wisdom is speaking. All you need to do is make space to receive its messages.
