If you can’t do dairy, or you experience dairy allergies or intolerance, non dairy milk might be a great substitute! Almond milk is one of the most common non dairy milks. It’s a kitchen staple so many of us rely on as an easy substitute for all things dairy.
You can drink almond milk, turn it into yogurt, make ice cream or ice pops, or even turn it into mouth-watering cheese!
Essentially anything you can do with cow’s milk, you can do with almond milk.
And the way you make homemade almond milk is exactly the same as for other non dairy milks.
But how do you make deliciously creamy, decadent homemade non dairy milk?
Why Make Non-dairy Milk at Home
From a nutritional point of view, there are many excellent reasons to make your own non dairy milk at home. I’ve talked about why making homemade nut or seed milk is one of my favourite ways to eat healthier, too.
When you make homemade non dairy milk, you can:
- avoid additional sugar
- avoid questionable additives like carrageenan. It may or may not pose a problem for you.
- ensure your almonds are high quality, raw and organic if that’s important to you.
- avoid synthetic vitamins. There are good reasons to avoid synthetic vitamins as much as we can.
- flavour it any way you like!
What you may not know is how easy it is to make your own homemade vegan milk.
For ingredients, you only need nuts or seeds, water, and some sea salt.
For equipment, you will need:
- a blender (preferably a high-powered one like a Vitamix or similar);
- a strainer and cheesecloth, or preferably, a nut bag. You can also use a produce bag, which is what I normally use.
Optional ingredients include sweetener or flavourings if you want to make a custom flavour that you can’t get anywhere else!
How I Make Homemade Dairy-free Milk
In today’s version, I’m using cinnamon and I’m not adding any extra sweetener. Cinnamon adds a slightly sweet note anyway so I don’t think it’s necessary.
This also keeps the recipe as nutritious and as versatile as possible.
The recipe as written makes a half-batch (about 2 cups), which is perfect for singles or small households.
This doesn’t contain any preservatives, so it won’t last more than 2-3 days in your fridge.
I prefer making smaller batches of homemade non dairy milk more frequently. That way we’re eating foods at their freshest.

Your info is safe with me. I will guard it with my life and promise no spam, ever. I genuinely hate it as much as you do!
Here’s my recipe for delicious, creamy dairy-free milk:

Homemade Cinnamon Almond Milk (No Added Sugar)
This is a great non dairy milk base recipe. Customize it how you like: added spices and flavours can give you a special and delicious result!
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup almonds preferably organic and as “raw” as possible, soaked overnight in the fridge
- 2 cups water
- pinch of sea salt you can omit this but I happen to consider it essential for bringing out the almonds' true flavour
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon or other flavourings as desired: cocoa, vanilla, strawberry, cardamom, blueberry, even pumpkin… the options are endless
Instructions
-
Strain and rinse the soaked almonds. Add them to a high-powered blender with the water. Blend on high until the almonds are thoroughly blended.
-
Using a fine strainer, a strainer lined with cheesecloth or a nut bag, strain your almond milk. Don't forget to reserve the leftover almond pulp for all kinds of other recipes**.
-
Mix in the sea salt and other flavourings if desired. Drink up!
Recipe Notes
This recipe makes a half-batch (2 cups), but you can easily double it.
Allergic to almonds or just don’t like them? Let’s get creative!
You can easily substitute the almonds in this recipe for any nut or seed of your choice. Sunflower seeds, hemp seeds, hazelnuts, pecans, sesame seeds, etc. are all delicious and nutritious.
How to Modify this Non Dairy Milk Recipe
Like many of my favourite recipes, this non dairy recipe is simple and great for everyday use.
For something special, there are loads of ways you can jazz up this basic almond milk.
Strawberries are awesome this time of year for naturally flavoured strawberry milk. Chocolate, vanilla, cocoa, pumpkin, etc.
